Source of the Smell

Reggie turned out to be a Pomeranian. He’d moved into a house around the corner a few months ago and his owner hadn’t gotten around to removing the cat flap in the back door yet. Consequently, he came and went as he pleased. He was another member of Tailspin’s dinosaur bone raiding party set to get all they could from the museum tonight.

Reggie wasn’t the only dog they collected along the way. Bruno the Dalmatian lived just three doors down. He was in the garden and saw the procession of pets going by. Penelope let him out too. Next was a one-eyed homeless cat who occupied an alleyway. He was twice the size of Penelope and looked to Rex as though someone had dipped him in muscle enhancer – his skin bulged and flexed when he moved. Missing half an ear and half his tail, Arthur the alley cat did not come across as someone Rex wanted to mess with.

“Where are we going?” Rex asked, wanting something to say because Arthur kept giving him side eye with his missing eye and it was creeping him out.

Tailspin chuckled, “I told you. We’re going to where we will find your almost like Fielding’s Bakery smell.”

Seeing no better option, Rex closed his mouth and carried on walking. It wasn’t long before his nose caught the scent. His pupils dilated, a wave of excitement catching his breath. It was the same scent he encountered at the caravan and again in the courtyard behind the strip club: the same as Fielding’s … almost.

Wait though. It was just the cinnamon and allspice, the nutmeg and other flavours that ought to be playing background to the kid’s smell. Where was the smell of the human? And why was the air filled with so many other incredible odours? He could smell bread and cakes, biscuits, pasties, pastry, sausage … it was a long list, and it made his stomach tighten with the need to eat.

Squinting his eyes, Rex searched for any sign of the young human male, and lifted his nose to test the air for the motorbike. Neither were present.

He stopped when he heard Tailspin chuckling.

“You’re wondering where the human is, right?”

Rather than answer, Rex said, “Where is the smell coming from? It’s everywhere.”

Reggie the Pomeranian sneered, “Something wrong with your nose? That’s Greg’s factory right there in front of you.”

Bruno stared wistfully into the distance. “Sometimes I come here just to close my eyes and breathe in the air. It’s the best spot in town.”

At the end of the street was a large brick building. It looked new, which is to say no more than a few years old.

“I was just a pup when they built this place,” reminisced Tailspin, the eldest in their pack.

Rex had to force his brain to focus on the investigation. Pushing food thoughts aside, he asked, “How many people work there?”

“Humans?” Tailspin confirmed. “Lots. More than I can fit in the pub for sure.”

Rex gritted his teeth. He wanted to find the one person, the kid on the motorbike.
